Well, being the gullible guy I am, I assumed that the publicist had actually asked Bob whether that was his preference or not. However, the first thing Bob does once we get on the air is break character and start talking about Smothers Brothers and Curb and Arrested Development. He didn't want to do the interview in character at all...I was pitching him questions that were right in his wheel house ("Got any Super Dave Safety Tips for the kids out there?" - Bob starts talking about politics). News Flash - Publicists are morons.
It's funny, because originally all my questions were going to be about his career as a whole, his relationship to his brother, Albert Einstein (Al Brooks), and his break into comedic writing (he's had an amazing career).
I get these emails from his publicist saying he doesn't want to focus on the other projects going on in his life. So I went back to the drawing board and only prepared questions that his character, Super Dave, would answer, and the first thing he busts out is, "Oh, I'm not a real stunt man."
I had to cut up the interview a little bit, make it more radio friendly...but lesson learned: Never trust publicists.
2. Always book extra studio time.
The interview was first set for Thursday 1:00-1:15, then changed to Friday 12:00-12:15. Studio was booked for 11:30 to 12:30...plenty of time right?
I ended up getting the call at around 12:30 or so...and had to cut into someone else's studio time.
3. Don't quit day job.
My interviewing skills are pretty non-existent. Nevertheless, I hope
someone enjoys this interview.
